What is appetite? Is appetite a physical, mental or emotional demand for food? Is appetite an obsessive craving? And why does it seem that appetite has such control over our actions? Is it our appetite that causes us to eat when our bodies don’t really need more food?
I couldn’t even begin to count the number of times I’ve had conversations with people, working to lose weight, who have shared that appetite is their worst enemy. Most of the people I have talked to also confessed that their appetite is usually the worst in the evening or during idle time.
Appetite, by definition, is the bodies natural need for fuel. You have probably noticed that when you are exercising diligently that you get hungry. This is appetite.
Hunger pangs are often mistaken for appetite. In fact there are many times where hunger pangs have nothing to do with your bodies requirement for fuel/food. Much of the time hunger pangs are a sign that your body is not getting enough water. By definition then, those pangs could be identified as thirst pangs instead of hunger pangs.
Then there are those cravings. Cravings have nothing to do with healthy appetite. Cravings are the psychological and emotional desire for food for the purposes of comfort. People take solace in food. I did it for decades. There are times where I still look for solace in food. It’s an addiction.
Appetite, or legitimate hunger, is a demand of the body met through proper nutrition. The body is the best resource you have for monitoring this. The body will tell you when it needs fuel. The body will tell you when it needs water. The body will tell you when you have had enough exercise. Trusting and listening to the body, for these purposes, will assist you in losing excess weight and maintaining a healthy body weight.
The body you were assigned at birth is different than any other body on the planet. There are as many differences as there are similarities, in regards to other bodies. Learning to listen to the body as the gauge for fuel needed will serve you better, in the long run, than focusing your beliefs in theories and systems that are not necessarily suited for your body.
All of this being said, in order to create and maintain the body you desire you must first heal the mind. If the body is overweight and out of shape it IS the direct reflection of the image of YOU in the mind. Thoughts become things. Thoughts of stress, worry, anxiety, fear and depression make a sick body. Thoughts of joy, peace, happiness, health and wellness create a healthy body.
Does it makes sense, then, to change the way you think in order to create the new body you desire? Yes! In the course of this remember, though, that YOU are not the body and YOU are not the mind. The body is a vehicle and the mind is the workshop of the Creator in you. To bring about healing put your faith in this truth. Through this truth find YOU and begin the process of forgiving you.
I believe, based on experience, that obesity is a spiritual condition. Food is a source of comfort. Food is a friend when no one else is there. Food is a drug that SEEMS to quiet the emotions for a brief period of time. For myself, food became the weight of the burden of grudges and unforgiveness carried with me for decades. That emotional weight builds up and shows itself on the body. This is why healing of the mind is the first priority.
