I have mentioned Jason Alexander in a couple of posts here, on Ask The Weight Loss Maven, regarding his weight loss story using Jenny Craig but I haven’t dedicated a post to it exclusively. A big part of the reason why I haven’t is because the search numbers for his weight loss story, in particular, haven’t been very substantial. However, because he is a celebrity, his name alone generates more than 60,000 searches per month so someone out there cares what’s going on in his life.
As always, there is an ulterior motive for today’s blog post and it has very little to do with Jason Alexander, his “weight loss story” or Jenny Craig. There are pictures and video to satisfy those of you searching for that kind of thing, but today’s post is geared more toward “thumbing my nose in the face of the New American Bureaucracy” versus the usual weight loss “how to” that you find here.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ve most likely heard of the recent PIPA and SOPA legislation that is currently up for vote in the United States. Companies like Google, WordPress and others are leading the charge up Capitol Hill in protest, and for good reason. If this bill passes there are many who believe that it will crush the Internet and perhaps even have devastating effects on the major media social sites including Facebook.
So why did I choose Jason Alexander as my target for this post? One word… celebrity. WordPress is circulating a video that points the finger for PIPA and SOPA at Hollywood, interestingly enough. They believe that a big part of the whole issue here is Hollywood losing money because of copyright infringement including little kids lip syncing to their favorite pop tunes.
“Weight Loss Before And After”
For those who have not seen the video that showed up on the front page of WordPress.org, the other day, I have added it here along with a link to a CNN where it is currently hosted.
In regards to weight loss and the weight loss industry, could PIPA/SOPA have an effect? Most likely not. As long as the celebrities are getting paid (and I BELIEVE they should get paid for their work) then all will be well. The issue is with those who are using their creations and then publicly broadcasting them online. I don’t believe that pointing the finger at Hollywood is the right course of action, in this case, because I believe that we should look a little deeper at the resounding issue here.
The bottom line is, and I believe this is what companies like WordPress and Google are trying to get at, is that IF the government is allowed to start censoring then they will be more likely to want more control. It’s like a snowball, if we give them a small snowball and let them stand on the mountain, and then we allow them to give it a push, it’s just going to get bigger and bigger. That’s where we are at. The United States was built on the foundation of “By the People, For the People.” It appears that there are those in power who want to change that.
Keep in mind that giving the government control will fix nothing. We just invested countless dollars and thousands of lives fighting for freedom, and are still fighting for freedom, in the war on terror. How much sense does it make to now demonstrate the world that we are willing to break down the very fabric of our freedom we have been fighting so diligently to defend for decades? People wonder why the United States has become the laughing stock of the planet? DUH!
Just my two cents, thanks for reading. I’ll be interested to hear any feedback you may have.
